Countering burnout

One way to counter burn-out when there is no opportunity to actually get away or do something else is to re-define your motivations for doing what you are doing.

For instance, if you seem to be stalled out on your technique, train for the goal of getting others to do better. Or if you are getting burned out on teaching, teach the class with the goal of you learning something new from the "same old" material that day. If you are burned out dealing with clients, refocus on the task as a way of setting you up for your next move/advancement.

I am constantly cycling through 3 phases as

  1. ardent student,
  2. committed teacher, and
  3. one who seeks/tests-out benefits in the real world.

I write until I am tired of writing, and then I teach until I am tired of teaching, and then I research until I am tired of researching, and then I write ...all as part of my 33 year role as martial arts professional.

Way overly simple statement, I realize... ...but perhaps it might give you one more piece towards formulating your personal approach.
