Subject: [The Quest List] Chris Penn''s Officially Unofficial Festival ''99 Review
Date: 1999-09-20 01:32:00
Festival 99 has come and gone. Quickly.
First, my Officially Unofficial Awards (you are encouraged to write your
own):
Best surprise: J. Courtland "Ninja Boss" Elliott
Proof that age and ability are not related: John "Flash" Poliquin
Newest view of common ideas: Guru Brown's Pencak Silat
Best stunt: John Poliquin's Flying Scissors Takedown
Birthday boy: Stephen K. Hayes
Best soloist: Tori Eldridge
T-shirt Bud Malmstrom would most approve of: Nebraska Quest Fitness - "You
can rest when you're dead"
Most energetic warmup since Richard Simmons: Raul "Count with me!" Meza
That said, the commentary:
First, a big shout out to many of my martial friends at the Westlake Quest
Center, the North Platte Quest Center, and to everyone from The Quest List who was
at Festival. It was great to match names and faces!
Festival 99, though shorter, was awesome. Lots of old friends, lots of
potential new friends. Good training. Surprises everywhere. One of the
things that took me by surprise was the amount of content packed into two
days. I'll admit - I was skeptical about having a two-day Festival instead
of the three day Festival, especially after last year's content-packed
Festival with Shiraishi sensei. But Festival 99 was surprisingly full of
content. The Pencak Silat session was fascinating - a real shift in
perspective from a technical standpoint, but common in the desire to win. My
personal favorite? How to go bowling with someone's head.
For Shidoshi Hayes: can we get the name translations of the various kata?
I'd like to hear what the translations come out as. I have in my notes:
Shosetsu - ? (Kukishinden Ryu)
Fudo - Immoveable(Shinden Fudo Ryu)
Hosetsu - ? (Kukishinden Ryu)
In terms of taijutsu, it's nice to be able to work with so many new people,
experience different types of partners and exercises. I had some great
experiences this weekend, and wanted to thank everyone who was gracious
enough to be a sympathetic uke for their help!
As far as the Internet goes, I was thrilled to hear Shidoshi Hayes
officially endorse the Internet as a first-line vehicle for communications.
We may be a thousand year old tradition, but we can happily catch the
technology wave. If you've lost directions for subscribing to The Quest List, I've

Suggestions for Festival 2000:
1. A mind science session. Perhaps the ideal thing for the Friday night
session if the two day format is kept. Not a physical workout, but still an
area of interest.
2. Keep the Festival footrace! Marissa, you'll have to sprint faster next
year...
3. More "old-timers"! We nearly missed a major crisis when Court Elliott
showed up in a surprise appearance. Next year, more "old-timers" (I prefer
the term "early adopters") at Festival!
4. More guest instructors! This year was the second great instructor I can
remember in the past two years.
5. If Festival 2000 experiences the same explosive growth that Festival 99
did, maybe open up that third ballroom.
Overall, a great Festival! Kudos to everyone who put it together and made it
work!
Chris
